Baptists and symbols?

I'm writing a paper and am trying to find information as to why the Baptist Churches do not use many symbols. I know Catholicism uses the Crucifix, and Baptists prefer the Cross (without Jesus on it), however why are many Baptist Churches minimal in decoration. I'm looking all over and I have ideas, but I'd like some more information. Anyone know the actual reasons?
